Cat. #001423113221: JOHN GILBERT

Rare and superb 10 x 13.5-inch sepia-tone portrait by Ruth Harriet Louise, taken from a silent movie-era Cinelandia album, boldly signed in blue fountain pen in the 1920s. The book page, which constitutes an impossible to find oversize portrait, is crisp and clean, with no chips or creases, and has been archivally affixed to a slightly larger backing board, for the purposes of preservation and potential framing. In very good condition. Dashing silent and early talkie leading man John Gilbert-- who died of a heart attack at 38, brought on by too much booze and sex-- was electrifying in The Phantom (1916), Happiness (1917), The White Heather (1919), Shame (1921), While Paris Sleeps (1923), The Wolf Man (1924), His Hour (1924), The Merry Widow (1925), The Big Parade (1925), Ben-Hur (1925), La Boheme (1926), Flesh and the Devil (1926), The Show (1927), Show People (1928), The Masks of the Devil (1928), Redemption (1930), The Phantom of Paris (1931), West of Broadway (1931), Tod Browning's Fast Workers (1933), and Queen Christina (1933).
